House Democrats Say Trump Admin Sabotaging Obamacare Enrollment

Four House Democrats wrote Monday to Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, accusing the Trump administration of depressing and sabotaging Obamacare enrollment efforts.

"We are concerned that the administration's decision . . . is driven neither by concerns regarding the effectiveness of navigators nor by a desire to safeguard taxpayer dollars," wrote Reps. Frank Pallone Jr., Gene Green, Diana DeGette, and Kathy Castor. "Rather, it appears that the decision fits within a pattern of Administration efforts to depress enrollment and sabotage [Obamacare]."

The Trump administration in August said it was slashing Obamacare advertising by 90 percent and only plans to spend $10 million on promotions during open enrollment season this fall compared to $100 million a year ago. Funding for "navigators," or consumer helpers, will also be cut.

"The decision to pull the rug out from these organizations just weeks before open enrollment begins is a clear attempt to undermine the [Affordable Care Act] and create chaos in the insurance market," the members wrote.

Republican senators will introduce a revised version of their proposal to replace Obamacare with the goal of getting a vote by the end of September.
