House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., called President Donald Trump's refusal to affirm the Paris climate agreement "a striking abdication of American leadership" in a tweet on Monday.
Trump did not participate with his G7 counterparts in promising to back the 195-nation Paris climate accord, The Hill reported Monday.
"The United States worked hard to bring other nations onboard in 2015 to pledge limits to the carbon pollution that is changing weather patterns and dirtying the air that our children breathe," Hoyer said in a statement. "Now, this President is willfully undermining America's global role, which puts Americans' safety and economic security at risk."
"From his refusal to reaffirm Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty in Brussels, undermining America's national security, to his refusal to keep America's word on fighting climate change, President Trump has shown the world an America that appears rudderless and in crisis," he continued.
"As a result of his statements and actions, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is now saying that European nations cannot trust the United States. I urge him to right the ship and take steps to reassure our allies that we stand by our NATO commitments without qualification and that we will continue to join them in the work of mitigating climate change," he said.
Axios reported Trump has privately told people he will quit the Paris climate deal.
