White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley Friday praised the Labor Department's new monthly jobs report, calling it a victory for President Donald Trump and his policies, as well as a win for the American people.
"We have more jobs available than people to fill them," Gidley told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "More people are employed in this country than ever before. We know the numbers of record unemployment for African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans. women are employed at record numbers for the first time in 70 years."
The results are a "testament" to what Trump has done with tax cuts, restructuring the tax code, and "getting the government out of the way" and allowing Americans to thrive, Gidley added.
Gidley also during the interview stressed the need to be "really tough" on China, reiterating the need for Trump's decision to call for more tariffs to go into effect on Sept. 1.
"Reversing decades-worth of the American worker, the American businessman, American industry and companies being taken advantage of by China is not going to happen overnight," said Gidley. "This president has come in and called out what we know to be the case about what China has been doing, whether it's forced technology transfer or technology theft," said Gidley.
However, he said the tariffs will not affect a trade deal with China, noting that Trump has a "great relationship" with President Xi Jinping.
"We had a deal in place," Gidley said. "At the last minute, they came back and tried to renegotiate that deal. We understand that. The president said he is not going to sign a bad deal."
