Debbi Hixon, whose husband, Chris, died in the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, has filed to run for the county school board.
Chris Hixon was the wrestling coach and athletic director at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when he was one of 17 people gunned down on Feb. 14 last year. His widow filed to run for a Broward County School Board seat on Friday, according to CBS 4 in Miami.
Debbi Hixon is a former science teacher at another school in the district., the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
“I’ve been screaming for change and asking the school district to step up and do things,” she said. “I decided if I want to see change, the way to do that is be on the board that makes decisions.”
“I want a seat at the table to voice my concern to make positive changes.”
If she wins the 2020 race, she would join Lori Alhadeff on the school board. Alhadeff’s daughter, Alyssa, was also murdered at Douglas High.
