President Donald Trump’s campaign has begun heavily targeting Hispanic voters in Florida during the final weeks leading up to Election Day, in an apparent attempt to counter falling ratings among seniors in the state.

The Miami Herald notes that Vice President Mike Pence appeared at an event in Miami-Dade County on Thursday, where he gave a speech at a Cuban memorial, just a day before Trump attempted to gain ground with seniors by promising them the first round of a coronavirus vaccine once it becomes available.

“I don’t know if there’s a more important two blocs in the state of Florida,” said Chuck Rocha, a Democrat political consultant who founded Nuestro PAC, a Latino outreach group.

The Herald notes that although Trump won Florida in 2016, winning seniors by 17 percentage points over his opponent, he only leads his current opponent by 10 points among seniors in Florida. Some national polls even have former Vice President Joe Biden leading among older voters.

“Even a small shift among this voter bloc has to be offset by a pretty significant increase across another voting bloc,” said Jeff Johnson, the AARP’s Florida director. “If one of three votes is cast by someone 65 and over, it’s going to take a lot to make up for a one point or two point shift.”
