The question of Russian inference in the 2016 election and possible collusion by President Donald Trump or his campaign “has twisted our politics into something unrecognizable,” Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., said Sunday.
In remarks to NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Himes, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, said he’s hoping for a report from special counsel Robert Mueller “that gets to the truth and gets out there.”
“The question of the Russian interference and the possibility of collusion by the president and his people has twisted our politics into something unrecognizable for the last two years — including behavior on the part of the president attacking the FBI, attacking Bob Mueller,” he said. “Everything about this has become political.”
Himes said the American people have been “on the edge or our seats” and deserve to know the results of the Mueller probe.
“If that truth indicates that President Trump committed no crime, impeachable or otherwise, so be it,” he said. “If it indicates he did, it's a much more complicated world. First and foremost, given that we've been on the edge of our seats, everyone in the country needs to know what happened. And then we decide where to take it from there.”
He also blasted ex-Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., as former head of the intel panel, saying he turned its aim into a defense of Trump.
“Devin is part of that group — it’s not a huge group — but part of the group in the Congress that is fully dedicated, facts be damned, at protecting the president,” he said. “We need to try to make this is bipartisan in how we approach whatever comes out. It's more important today than ever.”
Questioned on an expected appearance before the committee of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, Himes said the panel will “re-ask him the questions that he felt he needed to lie to us about when he testified in the last Congress.”
“We're going to want to get to the truth, allow him to correct the record,” he said. “And then the question is, now that we know the truth, what are the follow-ups? It will be an interesting week.”
