Pro-Hillary Super PAC Fuels Hope and Concern

Hillary Clinton has made no indication she wants to be the next president of the United States, but it isn't likely anyone doubts she does. In fact, supporters already have formed a new super PAC to boost her efforts.

Ready for Hillary, while by law not affiliated with the former New York senator and secretary of state, is fast becoming the de facto website for all things Hillary until an official campaign site is launched, The Washington Post reports.

Donations have been rolling in, but some Clinton advisers fear a backfire, as happened in 2008 when she was seen as the inevitable Democratic nominee, only to be surpassed by a half-term senator from Illinois named Barack Obama.

“I worry that this effort — while very well-intentioned — kind of shortens the life span of the icon and lengths the life span of the politician. You kind of grimace,” an unidentified Clinton campaign veteran told The Post.

Since campaign laws don't allow any affiliation between candidates and super PACS, anyone can set one up. That presents another problem for candidates: Donors aren't sure which super PAC to give their money to.

"It’s become a cottage industry," John Morgan, a member of President Bill Clinton’s 1996 national finance committee, told The Post. "It’s like, 'Who are you?' Just because you put the name Hillary at the end of your PAC — it could be a bait and switch. I want to make sure I can get the biggest bang for my buck."

But some Clinton insiders see the upstart super PAC as a boost for the potential candidate.

Former Bill Clinton Deputy Chief of Staff Harold Ickes, former Clinton White House political director Craig Smith and former Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer Jim Lamb are giving the group strategy advice. Clinton confidant James Carville put his name on a fundraising letter.

“I look at this as an outpost that will help Hillary if she runs,” Ickes told The Post.

Of course, not every super PAC is a fan. StopHillary2016.org has recently been set up by Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign manager Matt Rhoades.
