Daily Caller's Pappas: Jim Webb May Be Better Choice Than Hillary

Former Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia could be a formidable opponent of Hillary Clinton should he decide to seek the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, says Alex Pappas, a political reporter for The Daily Caller.

"Liberals are always talking about who could be the progressive, maybe more populace, alternative to Hillary Clinton and they say [Massachusetts Sen.] Elizabeth Warren," Pappas told Joe Concha, guest host of "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"Elizabeth Warren has said she's not interested, she's not running. I really don't think she's going to run, especially if Hillary does.

"But Jim Webb … he's southern, he's anti-war, so he could hit Hillary on that. He's got the populace thing going for him."

Webb, 68, served one term in the senate as a Democrat, was Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan, and is a decorated Vietnam War combat veteran.

"On Second Amendment issues, he's maybe a little more conservative, [and] may be able to pull a little more working class people on his side," Pappas said.

"Hillary will be vulnerable especially, probably on populace issues looking at the working class."

Webb said this week he's taking "a hard look" at the 2016 presidential nomination. He plans to travel to New Hampshire in October to speak on the campus of St. Anselm College in Manchester.
