While a majority of Americans think Donald Trump should drop the investigation into Hillary Clinton, nearly seven out of 10 of Republicans think the president-elect should continue the probe into his vanquished Democratic challenger, according to Rasmussen Reports poll.

The results among likely voters, according to the survey:

  • 52 percent said Trump should drop the investigation.
  • 41 percent said Trump should continue investigating.
  • 65 percent of Republicans say Trump should continue investigating.
  • 78 percent of Democrats say Trump should drop the investigation.

Trump implied on Sunday's "60 Minutes" interview that he would back off from his campaign pledge to appoint a special prosecutor to further investigate Clinton's use of a private email server and handling of classified information while secretary of state.

More than six out of 10 Americans think Clinton broke the law sending and receiving those classified communications over her private email server, according to Rasmussen.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on Nov. 13 to 14 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
