Former Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called to “abolish the Electoral College” just after casting New York’s first electoral vote for Joe Biden on Monday.

“I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office,” she wrote on social media after the vote.

“But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” she said.

Clinton would have won the 2016 presidential election if it had been based on the popular vote, which she won by about 2.9 million votes, but ultimately lost due to the Electoral College. She and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, are now two of New York’s 29 electors. The former secretary of state previously called for the abolishment of the Electoral College in 2000, after then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush beat then-Vice President Al Gore, despite Bush losing the popular vote.
