Hillary Clinton's press secretary on Wednesday accused intelligence Inspector General Charles McCullough of colluding with Republicans to damage Clinton's campaign for president.

"I think that Republicans are continuing to try to trumpet up and resurface these allegations for the purposes of hurting her campaign," Brian Fallon said on CNN's "New Day."

It was reported on Tuesday that McCullough sent a letter to two Republican lawmakers that some of Clinton's emails sent from her private server when she was secretary of state should have been marked with classifications even higher than "top secret."

Clinton has maintained that she neither sent nor received any emails on the server that were "marked classified at the time." Some have been marked as such since.

When Fallon made the allegation that McCullough was working in league with Republicans, CNN host Alisyn Camerota pointed out that the IG is not a Republican himself. He is an appointee of President Barack Obama and was confirmed by a Senate controlled by Democrats in 2011.

Fallon was undeterred, saying, "Actually, I think this was a very coordinated leak yesterday."

Camerota then asked why Fallon sees McCullough as a "stooge" of Republicans as he has said in he past.

"Because two months ago there was a Politico report that directly challenged the finding of this inspector general, and I don’t think he liked that very much," Fallon said.

"So I think that he put two Republican senators up to sending him a letter so that he would have an excuse to resurface the same allegations he made back in the summer that have been discredited."
