A controversial billionaire surgeon who was among advisers to Joe Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative has been named to a committee advising the Trump administration on health information technology, Politico reported.
A spokesman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announced he had chosen Patrick Soon-Shiong of Los Angeles to join a 25-member Health IT Advisory Committee authorized by a law signed by former President Barack Obama in December.
The legislation gives congressional leadership the power to name eight of the members.
Politico reported Soon-Shiong has been the subject of news stories that have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest involving his businesses.
For example, Politico has reported the majority of the expenditures of Soon-Shiong's nonprofit research organization flow to businesses and not-for-profits controlled by him – and the majority of its grants have gone to entities that have business deals with his for-profit firms.
