More than two dozen political appointees have quit their jobs at the Department of Health and Human Services this year and there could be a "mass exodus" if President Donald Trump loses the election.

Politico reported Monday that the situation at HHS due to the pandemic and the Trump administration's response to it has left political appointees there planning their exits.

"There will be a mass exodus should the election go the other way" against Trump, a senior HHS official said.

"I've personally seen people working on their resumes inside the office. It's no secret."

The report added that the political appointees at HHS who opt to stay in their jobs if Trump wins would likely be forced to compete with each other for a shrinking number of jobs in the nation's capital. The Trump administration has installed political appointees in several departments, including at HHS, to help the White House keep tabs on what's going on. Loyalty tests have also been given as Trump is continually criticized from unnamed sources in the media.

Over the summer, several high-ranking HHS officials quit their jobs after months of a brutal workload that's been exacerbated by Trump's criticism of health officials and his overall handling of the pandemic, Politico reported.
