In a debate where Republican candidate Donald Trump should have been on the defensive over his lewd comments about women, the opposite was true, according to Fox News contributor Herman Cain.
The 2012 GOP presidential candidate said Trump was a better performer while Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton didn't bring any substance to the debate.
"I would grade him as having done an excellent job because when you have real questions from real people, you get real answers. That's what Donald Trump delivered last night. Hillary only had political answers," Cain said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" morning show.
"I don't think that Hillary Clinton got the gloves on. She was on the defensive all night because she has no substance to talk about, so their whole strategy is attack, attack, attack. But when you have real people asking real questions, you get to hear the substance that Donald Trump represents," he said.
When asked about the tapes that surfaced Friday which forced many Republicans to distance themselves from the Trump campaign, Cain said, "I think the Donald Trump supporters understand the difference between somebody that says awful things. You can't defend what he said. American people are not stupid. They see that difference.
"They don't want to vote for the lesser of two evils. My pastor pointed out, 'Don't commit the third evil and not vote.' These are the voices that we have," Cain added.
Distinguishing words from actions, Cain said, "You have someone who said awful things or do you want someone who did awful things? It came out last night Donald Trump has more substance than Hillary Clinton by a long shot."
