Despite conservative roots dating back to the Reagan era, Heritage Foundation President Kay Coles James said she was "blocked" from serving in the Trump administration by former aide Omarosa Manigault, she told Politico.

It's not clear how a serial reality TV personality with zero conservative or political bona fides could elbow out James, who served in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and both Bushes, but she said that's how it went down.

"It was Omarosa," James told Politico. "The way it was described to me is she approached the whole thing like it was 'The Apprentice.' So she looked around Washington and said, 'OK, who do I need to get rid of first?'"

James, who led President Donald Trump's transition team for offices of management and budget, was eager to part of the president's ambitious "urban agenda," she told Politico.

"I was very looking forward to an opportunity to serve in that White House in some capacity to help maybe on domestic policy, maybe in the Office of Public Liaison — in any of those capacities to get the job done," James told Politico.

So instead, James took to the task of leading the search to find a successor to Jim DeMint at Heritage, and that search ended with her being named the first ever black female president of the conservative think tank.
