Cuellar: Take Action Against Countries That Won't Take Criminals Back

Fox News' Fox & Friends"

Action must be taken against countries that refuse to accept criminals who are being kicked out of the United States and sent back home, Rep. Henry Cuellar said Wednesday.

"We can put pressure on them, and we need to," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program, noting that he has been working on the issue, along with former Rep. Michael McCaul, since back in 2008.

"We can either stop granting their work VISAs. Whatever VISAs for those countries," said Cuellar, telling the program that the top country refusing deported people is China, along with Cuba, Vietnam, and many other countries.

The list of countries that refuse criminal deportations varies, but there is now "up to 62 other countries that are giving us a hard time," said Cuellar. "We just need to enforce the law that's been on the books for so many years."

President Donald Trump has made a push about getting illegal immigrants who break the law out of the country, and Cuellar said he has himself made his position very clear for several years.

"I do support immigration reform," he said, including having strong border security and a guest worker program.

"Then what do we do about the 11 or 12 million undocumented persons we have?" said Cuellar. "If somebody breaks the law, we don't want those individuals here. We do not want those individuals, and they need to be deported."

There are now 55 new immigration judges, and Cuellar said there are 25 more in the fiscal year 2017 appropriation bill.

"I want to hire more judges because those judges should make a decision, about either somebody stays or somebody should be deported," said Cuellar. "ICE has to be able to send those individuals as soon as possible. We don't want those individuals here."
