Heidi Cruz recently compared her husband Ted's failed presidential campaign to the fight against slavery.

She made the controversial comment during a conference call with the Cruz office's National Prayer Team, according to the Texas Tribune

A Goldman Sachs investment manager, Heidi Cruz told her husband's supporters that their efforts in the unsuccessful campaign were not wasted, affirming their belief that Cruz and his followers can rely on faith for "a long battle" toward their goals in government.

"This doesn't always happen in the timing of Man, and God does not work in four-year segments. Be full of faith and so full of joy that this team was chosen to fight a long battle," she explained, urging the campaign's supporters to remain positive about the future.

"Think about slavery," Cruz mentioned, "it took 25 years to defeat slavery. That is a lot longer than four years."

Social media users were quick to point out that overcoming slavery took longer than 25 years, according to a report in Mic.

The Mic report also noted that Ted Cruz seemed to show little concern with the legacy of slavery during his campaign, referencing a New York Times report in which Cruz defended the flying of the Confederate flag.

Ted Cruz is also one of the senators holding up a bill for the End Modern Slavery Initiative, according to Time. A Cruz spokesman told Time that the Texas senator is concerned that money in the anti-slavery bill could be used for organizations that support or provide abortions.
