President Donald Trump will likely present "principled realism" while promoting American values during his address before the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in the hours before the president's first speech to the world's delegations.

"I think the approach the president is going to take will be a principled realism, where we take a clear-eyed look at the world but still promote American values, including democracy, human rights, all of those things that we as Americans embody and show the world every single day," Nauert told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

Trump also will speak of sovereignty, while promoting "strong countries," she said.

"We want strong countries, strong allies so that we can fight the battles for the future," she commented. "When I say fight, I don't mean militarily, I mean diplomatically."

The matter of Venezuela, where there has been a "tremendous erosion of democracy" is also demanding change, said Nauert.

Trump on Monday applauded the United Nations for taking steps to reform itself, she noted, and recognized the UN's efforts to help people and be "far less about a bloated bureaucracy."

Ambassador Nikki Haley has been a phenomenal person" in calling for reforms, Nauert said. "One of the issues we used to talk about here a lot was anti-Israel bias on the part of member states. Nikki Haley has called out those countries and is trying to make those changes."

Iran and North Korea have been getting a great deal of attention, but Nauert insisted that the United States' issue with Iran is not with its people.

"The people of Iran like the United States," she said. "They would like to see democracy over there. Our issue is with the leader ... there are so many destabilizing factors. When there are bad things going on  . . . Iran finds its way to be involved in that."
