Haley Has Vetoed $110 Million in Spending

By    |   Friday, 28 June 2013 02:04 PM EDT

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has vetoed $110 million worth of public education programs and services in the Palmetto State since 2011, a review of nearly 200 budget votes by The State newspaper has found.

It reveals public education has been hit harder than any other government service — with Haley's vetoes accounting for more than a quarter of the $419 million she has nixed in state spending since 2011.

The figures were released as Haley, a first-term Republican, prepares to announce an "education reform package" as part of her re-election campaign launch, the newspaper says.

House and Senate lawmakers have overridden most of the money she has vetoed in education spending.

Haley is facing a tough rematch next year against Democratic state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, who lost a close race in 2010 to Haley.
