Sen. Graham: Trump 'On the Right Path' on Gun Control Reforms

(Fox News' "Fox and Friends")

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham made it official Thursday: He's not supporting either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in their bids for the presidency, but he did applaud Trump for his plans to "go to the middle" on the issue of gun control.

"If gun control could stop radical Islamic attacks, there would be no Paris," the one-time GOP presidential candidate told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "I don't want your audience to believe this is a gun control problem. This is an intelligence failure problem and an attitude problem and [President] Barack Obama letting the enemies walk all over us."

Graham said, though, that he also believes that people who are on the nation's "no fly" list should not be able to get guns. However, he thinks there should be a process that allows people who are denied gun purchases to appeal the decision, and "that is where Trump is going...if he will do that I think he'll make us safer."

But that doesn't mean Graham is on board to support Trump or work together for his election, even though he's the presumptive party nominee.

"I worry a lot about the GOP," said the senator. "I worry that the GOP is cutting its own throat by doubling on the idea that we'll deport all illegal immigrants, including grandmothers."

And even though South Carolina voters supported Trump, Graham said he's making his decision based on what he thinks is best for the country.

"I won't support Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump because I don't believe either one have a plan to keep my country safe," said Graham. "I'm so sorry we are where we are but as to Hillary Clinton, if you vote for her, you'll continue the failed policies...Donald Trump is showing some willingness to move. All I can say to Mr. Trump, you're on the right path here, my friend."

He said that if he were giving Trump advice, he'd tell him to tell voters that if he'd elected, "we'd have more FBI agents unleashed to defend this nation. There will be less FBI agents in 2017 than in 2013. If I were Mr. Trump I would tell the American people, if we capture high value terrorists - we'll put them in Gitmo and hold them for the intelligence gathering purposes. That we're going to rebuild our military not have the smallest Navy since 1915, the smallest army since 1940."

Meanwhile, Graham said he went to the White House on Wednesday to discuss boosting the FBI's efforts, and he wants to add money to the system to make sure the FBI gets the resources it needs.

"It makes no sense to me that in 2017 the FBI has less agents than in 2013, given the way that the world has deteriorated," he said.
