Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is blasting the FBI’s vetting of National Guard members in Washington, D.C., for the inauguration, saying it is “the most offensive thing” he’s ever heard.
Abbott, a Republican, made his comments, after the FBI vowed to vet all of the National Guard troops coming into the capital to secure President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. U.S. defense officials had expressed concern about an insider attack from service members.
In a Monday night tweet, Abbott wrote: “This is the most offensive thing I’ve ever heard. No one should ever question the loyalty or professionalism of the Texas National Guard. I authorized more than 1,000 to go to DC. I’ll never do it again if they are disrespected like this.”
No signs of an "insider threat" to Biden's inauguration have been found so far, according to the Department of Defense.
Approximately 25,000 National Guard members will be in Washington before, during, and immediately following Wednesday's inauguration.
