Sen. Graham's Sister, in New Campaign Ad, Tells How He Raised Her

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham has called on his little sister to help him win next month’s GOP primary battle in South Carolina.

In the senator’s new campaign ad, Darline Graham Nordone reveals how he helped to raise her after their parents died within months of each other when she was just 13 years old.

"He's just always been there for me as long as I can remember," she said in the commercial, part of a six-figure statewide media buy that includes two television and two radio ads, according to The State.

"My parents, since they had to work a lot, Lindsey was kind of the one there that took care of me. If I fell down and scraped my knee, Lindsey was the one I ran to."

Their parents, who owned a pool hall and restaurant in Central, S.C., died just 15 months apart when Graham was in college at the University of South Carolina and she was still in middle school, according to The State.

After their deaths, Graham helped Darline move in with their aunt and uncle in nearby Seneca and continue with school, while returning home on weekends to give her support.

Saying her brother always thinks of others before himself, she said in the ad, "It was hard when we lost my mom and my dad. Lindsey assured me that he was going to take care of me, he was going to be there for me."

Now married with two children in Lexington, S.C., she continued, "He never let me down. Never. I don’t see how he did it, to take on the responsibility of raising a little sister. That came from within for Lindsey."

Graham arranged to become Darline's legal guardian before he joined the U.S. Air Force so that she would receive health benefits and be covered by insurance, The State reported.

Graham is the heavy favorite in the June 10 GOP primary, during which he’ll face six other Republicans, including pastor Det Bowers. Graham must win 50 percent of the vote or he’ll be forced into a runoff election.

Graham has agreed to debate his primary opponents in a June 7 event hosted by S.C. Educational Television in collaboration with The State newspaper.
