More than twice as many Republicans say that President-elect Donald Trump's views are closest to their own concerning the major issues (63 percent) than the views of the average GOP member of Congress (27 percent), according to a Rasmussen Reports survey released on Monday.

Among all likely U.S. voters, 53 percent identify with the Republican team, although 37 percent say Trump's views are closest to their own, 37 percent say the views of the average Democratic congressman most match their own and only 16 percent say their views are closest to the average GOP lawmaker.

Other findings of the poll include:

  • Among voters not affiliated with either major political party, 34 percent say their views most closely match Trump's, while 29 percent feel closer to the average Democrat in Congress. Only 16 percent are more aligned with the average GOP representative.
  • The gender split was quite pronounced. Among female voters, only 32 percent felt Trump best represented their views, while 41 percent said the average Democratic congressman and 14 percent the average GOP legislator. Among male voters, 43 percent said Trump best represented their views, while 31 percent felt it was the average Democratic congressman and 19 percent the average Republican congressman.
  • Fifty-four percent of likely voters think major legislation to improve the country is likely to be passed during Trump's first 100 days in office.
  • However, only 48 percent are confident that Trump and Congress will work together to do what's best for the American people

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on Jan. 3-4. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
