GOP Spends $4 Million to Save Mourdock

Friday, 02 Nov 2012 07:17 AM

Republicans are spending $4 million to boost Tea Party favorite Richard Mourdock’s candidacy in the Indiana U.S. Senate race after his comments on rape threatened what had been regarded by many as a safe pickup for the GOP.

Over the next few days, the huge sum will be spent across the airwaves in the final week of the campaign to save Mourdock, Politico reports. The bulk of the cash is coming from well-known Republican groups like American Crossroads, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Club for Growth.

Democrats are projecting optimism that their candidate, Rep. Joe Donnelly, is poised to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the cycle.

Experts told Politico that Mourdock’s situation is different from that of Todd Akin. Many Republicans have stayed away from the Missouri Republican senate candidate but the influx of outside money for Mourdock shows how quickly Republicans nationally have rallied behind him.

The impetus for this is a slim chance now that the GOP could retake the Senate. A net gain of four seats are needed to win the majority — or three if Mitt Romney wins the White House. Republicans must hold the Indiana seat, which had been occupied by veteran Sen. Richard Lugar since 1977 until Mourdock won the GOP primary earlier this year.
