Head of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus Thomas Massie blasted the National Rifle Association for coming out against bump stocks in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre, the Washington Examiner reported.

Usually it's the NRA, considered the most powerful lobby in the country, blasting lawmakers for being soft on guns and the Second Amendment.

But with the NRA's stated position Thursday that devices like bump stocks that can convert weapons to be fully automatic, "should be subject to additional regulations," it's Rep. Massie, R-Kentucky, who has the gun lobby in his crosshairs.

"I think it's a horrible idea, to ask the ATF to contort existing law," Massie told the Examiner. "I think it sets a bad precedent. We're asking the Trump ATF to be stricter on gun owners than the Obama ATF."

Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) signed off on bump stocks being a legal device in 2010, when President Barack Obama was in office.

"I trusted they did the right thing, and I think it demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of how a government is supposed to work," Massie told the Examiner. "I don't think you can read a ban on bump fire stocks into existing law."

Bump stocks are attracting intense scrutiny since authorities revealed that the perpetrator of the Las Vegas massacre had 12 such devices on his semi-automatic weapons to make them fire like fully automatic weapons, which are, in fact, illegal.

There is a bipartisan push to render them illegal through legislation, or, as the NRA suggested, via regulations.
