The Republican Party is having a tough time with President Donald Trump in office, and recent political races indicate his presidency could pose a bigger problem down the line for depending on whether candidates choose to embrace him or cross him, The Washington Post reports.

Trump dominates the GOP base – 83 percent of Republicans approve of the job he’s doing according to the most recent Gallup Poll – but a September CNN poll found that fewer than three in 10 Americans hold a favorable view of the party, an all-time low mark.

The outcome in last week’s Virginia gubernatorial campaign could be a cautionary tale of how the GOP handles future elections.

Republican Ed Gillespie had taken up similar positions on issues as Trump had, including the NFL national anthem, Confederate monuments and immigration, but not once did the president campaign for Gillespie. He lost to Democrat Ralph Northam by nine points and Trump later said it was because Gillespie didn’t embrace the president.

“Virginia is not the nation,” writes the Post. … “But as the principal data point staring at Republicans this weekend, Virginia illustrates why the debate about the party’s fate under Trump will accelerate. There are no easy answers.”
