Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are looking to remove any Democratic roadblocks for the president-elect's Supreme Court nomination.

The seat on the high court was vacated February when Justice Antonin Scalia died, and Trump is believed to be looking to fill the post quickly when he assumes office on Jan. 20.

The Washington Examiner raised three options the GOP could use to have Trump's nomination clear any potential hurdles thrown up by the Democrats:

  • Stop the Filibusters: Change Senate rules to require a simple majority, instead of 60 votes, to end a filibuster over a president's Supreme Court nominee. Democrats eased the rule in 2013 when the GOP was blocking lower court nominees, but left it intact for Supreme Court nominees.
  • Nominate Sen. Ted Cruz: Trump's bitter rival for the GOP presidential nomination is reviled by most of his colleagues in the Senate, according to the Examiner. Plus, putting him on the Supreme Court would stop him from opposing a Trump re-elect in 2020. "There are a lot of senators would like to get Ted Cruz out of the Senate," conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg was quoted by the Examiner.
  • Nominate Sen. Mike Lee: "Senators appointed for Senate confirmed posts in administration historically sail through the confirmation process," the Examiner noted. Lee, a Republican from Utah, was on the list of 21 justice possibilities that Trump previously compiled.

Meanwhile, The New York Times noted that Trump's victory vindicates Republican senators, who refused to act on President Barack Obama's nomination of Judge Merrick Garland.

Republicans had maintained the choice of a new justice belonged to the next president.
"It now belongs to Mr. Trump," the Times said.
