The Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol tweeted Saturday the Republican party has turned into a "cult of personality worthy of a banana republic," responding to a tweet sent out by the official GOP account that featured a smiling President Donald Trump at a podium accompanied by the words, "That feeling when it's Christmas Eve."

Kristol, a frequent critic of Trump who vocally opposed him throughout the 2016 primary and general election, in mid-November said the president and former controversial Senate candidate Roy Moore were bringing out his "inner liberal."

He also criticized the people who have bemoaned the "war on Christmas," and tweeted out an image Saturday of the painting, "Washington Crossing the Delaware."
