Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., has joined several other Republicans in criticizing President Joe Biden for withdrawing a rule requiring college campuses disclose connections to Chinese cultural programs that have been accused of pushing propaganda.

Cotton said in a statement that Confucius Institutes, who provide courses on the Chinese language and culture in roughly 500 K-12 schools and about 65 colleges in the United States, are "front groups for the Chinese Communist Party."

Former President Donald Trump’s administration submitted a proposal shortly before his term ended that would have required American educations institutions to disclose any links with organizations funding either directly or indirectly by China, but this policy was revoked about one week after Biden took office, according to Newsweek.

"The federal government ought to shut down these regime-run institutes or, at a minimum, require colleges to disclose their secret agreements with them," Cotton added. "Instead, the Biden administration is allowing a foreign influence operation to continue in the shadows."

New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik also criticized the Biden administration, saying that the decision to withdraw the rule "emboldens the Chinese Communist Party" and will help "fuel the propaganda of America's number one adversary."

Georgia GOP Rep. Rick Allen added: "The Chinese Community Party's influence on America's education system is a national security threat, and we must require academic institutions to be transparent about their ties."
