Donald Trump's surprising ascension to President-Elect stumped the masses, or at least Google users. Two of the most searched phrases on Google Wednesday were "How did Trump win?" and "Why did Trump win?" according to Google Trends.

Trump won with at least 270 of the electoral votes in a tight race that was called at around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday. He was predicted to lose by a landslide to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, but she failed to pick up the votes she needed in major swing states such as Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.

Clinton was up in all of the major polls ahead of the race and most analysts picked her by a huge margin, including 538's Nate Silver, who had her with a 72 percent chance of winning.

So how did it happen? How was Trump elected as the 45th president of the United States?

According to exit polls, he won with support from white voters, male voters, white voters without a college degree 72 to 23 percent, and Clinton underperformed in most areas where she was expected to do well.
