Rep. Anthony Gonzalez on Tuesday backed the president's plans on trade for both Mexico and China, saying that both are vital for the farmers and manufacturers in his state of Ohio and nationally.

"The one thing I would say is probably the most enthusiastic bill that we consider, at least for my district, is USMCA," the Ohio Republican said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"USMCA would absolutely benefit our farmers, our manufacturers."

Meanwhile, China is the "biggest existential threat" globally, and that base must be shored up as well, said Gonzalez.

Trade negotiations have been underway with China for decades, as "they have been abusing trade agreements since 2001," said Gonzalez. "To me it's going to come down to how well do we negotiate this deal, what enforcement mechanisms do we have in place to make sure they do play by whatever rules they ultimately agree to, and then we move forward."

He said he has faith that a trade deal will be reached, as the Trump administration is standing firm after the Chinese tried to "retrade the deal at the last second" and the United States walked away.

Meanwhile, he acknowledged tariffs can be harmful to his constituents, depending on what happens in the supply chain.

"What I'm hearing from my businesses is when they were at 10%, usually the business community could kind of figure that out amongst themselves," said Gonzalez. "As they ratchet up to 25%, I do think you'll see some price increases potentially because there's not as much room to kind of pass it back and forth in the supply chain."

He added that he thinks raising prices on customers would be the "last thing" retailers would want to do.

Gonzalez admitted he was skeptical when Trump threatened tariffs on Mexico, but now it appears the tariffs "actually sparked some change on the Mexican side, and that's much-needed change."
