Massachusetts GOP Senate nominee Gabriel Gomez called Democratic Rep. Ed Markey's campaign against him "dirty and low" Friday, saying the congressman was "pond scum" for the tactics he's using to sway voters ahead of the June 25 special election.

Gomez, a former Navy Seal, said in a local interview put up on YouTube that he was fed up with Markey ads criticizing his views on guns and his support for a group that has criticized the administration's handling of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

"You know I've got four young kids, and they gotta sit there and gotta see an ad with their dad, who's a SEAL, who served honorably, talk to anybody I served with — whether as a pilot or as a SEAL, anybody I worked with," Gomez said after speaking at the Newtown Needham Chamber of Commerce.

"And for him to be as dirty and low, pond scum, to like put me up there next to bin Laden, he's just gotta be called what he is — that simple."

According to The Hill, Gomez spoke out in defense of his own campaign ad that criticized Markey for running ads comparing him to bin Laden and blaming him for the Newtown, Conn., school shootings.

One Markey ad, according to The Hill, says that Gomez "is against banning high-capacity magazines like the ones used in the Newtown school shooting," but doesn't attack him personally. Another Markey ad that uses video of bin Laden reportedly refers to Gomez' support of a group that has differences with the Obama administration on counterterrorism policies.

For its part, the Markey campaign called the attacks "completely baseless" and "a new low" in the race to fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry.
