Gomez Turns to Scott Brown to Boost Mass. Senate Campaign

Thursday, 20 June 2013 10:32 PM EDT

Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown is hoping to provide a ninth inning boost to fellow Republican Gabriel Gomez when he appears alongside him at a campaign rally the night before Tuesday’s special election to fill the seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry, reports the Hill.

Gomez is hoping Brown’s appearance will give him the push he needs to pull off an upset victory over Democratic front-runner Rep. Edward Markey.

Gomez has, up to this point, shunned the help of GOP bigwigs in an attempt to portray himself as a Washington, D.C. outsider.

Markey has employed a completely opposite strategy.

He’s called on his party’s big names, including President Obama and former President Clinton, and Vice President Biden is set to lend his support in a visit on Saturday night.

At this point, Markey’s moves appear to be succeeding.

The most recent survey, conducted by a Republican pollster for an outside group backing Gomez, finds the Republican candidate down by three percentage points.

Gomez's own internal polling, released earlier this week, showed him trailing by seven percentage points.
