Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, responding to the complaints from Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson concerning the president's call to a Gold Star widow, commented that the level of hatred from the left has "left them a little deranged," and that Wilson "can't figure out the time has come to keep her mouth shut."

"Unfortunately, there are some politicians and some reporters who have lost their way, Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "This is, I think, tragic for America that we are going to turn...a Gold Star wife into a political football."

He later added that the "level of hatred on the left has left them a little deranged and unable to show any decency in situations like this."

Gingrich's comments followed an interview given by Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida on CNN, where she continued her arguments that she'd heard, over a speaker phone, remarks President Donald Trump had made to the widow of Green Beret Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed in action in Niger along with three fellow Green Berets.

As far as Wilson is concerned, Gingrich commented that the American political system allows a wide range of people to be elected to public office.

"It doesn't mean they're wise, it doesn't mean they're knowledgeable, it doesn't mean that they have any sense of decency," said Gingrich. "It means they won an election, and I think what you saw is a very simple contrast [between] a man who has served his country for over 40 years, risked his life, lost his son, dedicated himself to defending America, and frankly a politician who doesn't know anything, has no shame, has no sense of understanding, and can't figure out the time has come to keep her mouth shut. I think that's the contrast."

Earlier Friday, Wilson also sounded out on CNN against Chief of Staff John Kelly, after the retired four-star Marine Corps general chastised her during a press briefing on Thursday,  accusing her of politicizing a "sacred" presidential effort to console the grieving loved ones of a slain soldier.

"I think that John Kelly has served America, risked his life, lost his son in combat," Gingrich told Fox News. "I think Kelly stands for the best of American qualities, and I think yesterday he was a little bit like a grandfather trying to explain to a country that had lost its way...and I thought that Gen. Kelly was remarkably powerful, emotional, morally correct in what he said the way he said it."

Also on Friday, Gingrich said he believes House Speaker Paul Ryan and Ways and Means Committee Chairman are an effective team and they'll get a tax reform bill through by early Thanksgiving.

"They cannot leave town without having passed it this year because we need the economic growth both to pay for our stronger military, as has been pointed out by mark short and others, but also we need the economic growth so people have take home pay and jobs," said Gingrich.

If the Republican Party, by next summer, is considered the party of economic prosperity, take home pay and jobs, it will win the 2018 election, he added, but "if we're not, we have a problem."
