Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, publicly named the person some believe to be the whistleblower, whose claims touched off the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, Politico is reporting.

His comments came Wednesday night during a House Judiciary Committee meeting. Gohmert included the person's name as he went through a list of witnesses he said the panel should call before voting on impeachment, Politico noted.

He did not identify the person as the whistleblower.

Gohmert was later asked by Politico about mentioning the name of the purported whistleblower. He maintained he was just "naming witnesses."

"I could care less who the whistleblower is," he said.

Democrats have maintained that any effort to identify the whistleblower could put the person's life in danger. And they fear it could stop others in the future from revealing wrongdoing in the government.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said last month he personally could expose the name of the whistleblower at any time and there is nothing in the nation's laws to stop him.

Gohmert was later asked about the appropriateness of identifying the person and whether it was in violation of whistleblower protection statutes.

"You need to do your homework," he said.

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., blasted the naming of the person.

Beyer tweeted: "House Republicans just committed an incredible and outrageous breach. The President threatened the whistleblower with violence, and whether the person just named is the whistleblower or not they were just put in real danger. This is unacceptable and there should be consequences."
