The "macho atmosphere" during the 2016 presidential election presented difficulties for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said.

"I think it was difficult for Hillary Clinton to get by the macho atmosphere prevailing during that campaign, and she was criticized in a way I think no men would have been criticized,” Ginsburg said at a Columbia University event Sunday, CNN reported.

"Sexism played a prominent part,” Ginsburg said at the event, but said she believed the U.S. would be ready for a female president, “next time."

Ginsburg said at the event that she believes the “#MeToo” movement that has led to women speaking out against sexual harassment is here to stay.

“It’s too widespread … it’s amazing that for the first time, women are really listened to, because sexual harassment had often been dismissed as, ‘Well, she made it up,’” Ginsburg said at the event, CNN reported.

Ginsburg said she still hopes that an Equal Rights Amendment will happen.

“Equal stature of men and women is as fundamental as the basic human rights,” the Supreme Court justice said at the event, CNN reported.
