Former House Speaker and political commentator Newt Gingrich says even he gets overwhelmed by the news onslaught — and watches movies for “the ideal diversion.”

In an opinion piece for Fox News posted Sunday, Gingrich noted maintaining your sanity amid a fast political pace in the news and on social media isn't easy.

“For me, the ideal diversion is watching movies,” he wrote. “I have always loved film and I’ve often found that really good movies help me understand and appreciate life and other perspectives in unique ways.”

“They help us understand a world of good vs. evil — and the necessity that good must act to defeat evil. And sometimes they reflect a moment in time, so we can gain a better understanding of history,” he added.

He even chided Republicans for taking aim at Hollywood, pointing to the 1954 Elia Kaza-directed classic “On The Waterfront,” starring Marlon Brando, as the best kind of storytelling.

“As much as Republicans complain about modern Hollywood (and vice versa), the Silver Screen is one of America’s great contributions to the world,” he wrote.

Gingrich called the Brando film in particular “the story of a guy who is forced to stand up to the mob so he can earn an honest living free of corruption.”

“It takes somebody of enormous courage to stand up to that corruption and insist on defeating it,” he wrote. “This is all incredibly relevant today.”
