Gingrich: Trump's Attack on Judge 'Completely Unacceptable'

Sunday, 05 June 2016 08:30 AM EDT

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich – a consistent supporter of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump – has rebuked the GOP's presumptive nominee for his attacks on a federal judge.

In an email to the Washington Post,
Gingrich joined top Republicans in condemning Trump's repeated bashing of District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing lawsuits over Trump's real estate operation, as inherently unfair because of his Mexican descent.

"I don’t know what Trump’s reasoning was, and I don’t care,” Gingrich says in the email, the Post reports. "His description of the judge in terms of his parentage is completely unacceptable."

On Sunday, Gingrich expanded on his remarks.

"This is one of the worst mistakes Trump has made," Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday." "I think it's inexcusable."

Gingrich did stress, like others, that Trump has "every right to criticize a judge" and has "every right to say certain decisions aren't right."

But the judge is "an American. Period. When you come to America, you get to become an American and Trump who has grandparents who came to the U.S. should understand this as much as anybody," he said.

Current House Speaker Paul Ryan also has condemned the remarks as "out of left field."
