Gingrich Compares Trump's Debate Prep to Babe Ruth

When it comes to debate preparation, Donald Trump is a bit like baseball legend Babe Ruth, who was not known for being a great practice athlete, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday about how the Republican nominee is preparing for the upcoming presidential debates.

"I think it's important to remember, Babe Ruth was a great game player, the best all-around baseball player in history, he was both a pitcher and a home run king, but he was not a great practice athlete," Gingrich, one of the GOP nominee's main surrogates, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"He got a lot of extra adrenaline when it was a real game and something was at stake. Trump is like that. He doesn't practice a whole lot. It's not his thing. But he listens carefully."

That was on display during Wednesday night's NBC/MSNBC Commander-In-Chief Forum, and in his national security speech earlier in the day, said Gingrich.

"My guess is that what you'll get is Donald Trump's going to come in ready, but he's going to come in as Donald Trump," said Gingrich. "Relaxed, cheerfully looking forward to it. Hillary will prepare, memorize, study. Have 27 different strategies lined up. She'll practice with 19 different people.

"None of that will matter. Who are you going to recruit to pretend you're Donald Trump? It's impossible. There's no other Donald Trump other than Donald Trump. It won't work."

The forum was a "big victory" for Trump, Gingrich said, but a "pretty embarrassing moment" for Clinton.

"[She] could not answer Matt Lauer and then turned around and couldn't answer a veteran who asked her the same question," said Gingrich. "You can tell how bad the debate was last night for Hillary because The New York Times today attacked Matt Lauer because he wasn't mean enough to Trump.

"So the left is now very upset that Matt Lauer didn't do his job. He didn't go in there on a one-sided basis and protect Hillary and attack Trump. That tells you that Trump did pretty darn well last night."

Clinton also lied during the forum about her email scandal, said Gingrich.

"She's such a liar, it's disgusting," he told the program. "When the FBI says to her, 'What about the paragraphs that had 'C,' meaning classified she said, 'Oh, I didn't realize that meant classified. I thought that was just a part of organizing the paragraph.'"

Meanwhile, 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney has said he wants Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and his running mate, Bill Weld, on the debate stage this fall, and Gingrich said he feels sorry for the former Massachusetts governor for his past history and losses.

"Do you want Hillary Clinton to be president, pick a radical Supreme Court, bring all the corruption into the White House or not?" Gingrich said. "If you don't want her to do that, you only have one alternative that makes sense, that's Donald Trump. Everything else is silly and in this case Mitt Romney is just being silly."
