A coalition of small-business owners has joined with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for a tour across the U.S. to promote tax cuts, according to The Hill.

The group is planning to encourage legislators at local town hall meetings in key congressional districts to turn focus toward smaller goals than tax code overhaul or healthcare, the website noted.

Organizers of the campaign said that many business owners would like tax cuts for businesses and middle-income Americans, and a tax holiday that would allow companies to bring back billions to the U.S. that had been kept offshore, The Hill reports.

"I'm optimistic we might be able to get a pretty good consensus on tax cuts and get it passed and signed by Thanksgiving," Gingrich told The Hill.

Tax cuts would give Republicans a political win, while also providing a stimulus to the economy, Gingrich said, adding that such victory is vital for Republicans

"If we don't do something like that, we are in real trouble, and we have a real chance of having Nancy Pelosi as the next speaker of the House," Gingrich told The Hill.

Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow, a dog-care franchise told the website: "This is vital for Republicans who need a win now."

"Politically, tax relief is the issue that can unite the factions of the Republican Party and even attract some Democrats, so it stands a better chance of passing than divisive issues like healthcare reform," Ganahl added.

The coalition is presenting data from a Job Creators Network poll that shows small business owners would rather have tax cuts than a repeal of Obamacare.

According to the poll of 500 small business owners:

  • 48.6 percent said tax cuts would help them most.
  • 27.4 percent said healthcare reform would help most.
  • 8.6 percent cited regulatory relief as what they wanted most.

Gingrich met privately with Congress and the White House last week, and said he urged leaders to take a simpler approach than revamping the tax code.

"I think we need to focus on the art of the possible, and my view is that they should not do anything to risk not getting this done by Thanksgiving," Gingrich told The Hill.

On Saturday, Gingrich wrote a column for Fox News presenting his plan for tax cuts, saying that "cutting the tax on business will create more businesses, which will create more jobs and higher wages."
