Gingrich: Stein Represents 'Nut-Wing' of Politics With Recounts

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich Tuesday dismissed Green Party nominee Jill Stein, who is demanding a vote recount in three states, as representing the "nut-wing of American politics," and said that Hillary Clinton's campaign is showing its desperation by associating with her.

"Notice that there's not a single state in the country, not one, where a recount would allow her to win," Gingrich told Fox News' "Happening Now" program. "I mean, she got so few votes everywhere that there's not a single state where she's in contention. She would be lucky to go into third place in a couple of places."

Show host Jenna Lee, though, pointed out that Stein has said her priority for seeking recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan is not because of ensuring a smooth transition of power, but rather to determine if there was an issue with the voting systems.

"Well, I think it's perfectly appropriate to look at whether there's a systematic issue, but the Obama White House, hardly a friend of Donald Trump's, has said there's not," said Gingrich. "The head of Wisconsin voting system said there's not."

And in Pennsylvania, there were a lot of paper ballots used, he continued.

"So you have to think, what did the Russians do?" said Gingrich. "Come over and manually ballot, put in paper ballots?"

Instead, Gingrich said, what is really going on is the same thing that happens when the left loses at every level — "you begin to get this sort of nut-fringe showing up."

And with Clinton's camp associating with Stein, "I think it tells you how desperate and disoriented her campaign has become," said Gingrich.

"The whole thing is a joke," he continued. "It's an expensive joke and will cost the taxpayers money. It's a joke. There's nothing serious about this, but of course, it generates news coverage. Gives you something to talk about."

And the recounts, said Gingrich, "just tell you we are in the silly season, which by the way is compounded by having Congressman Keith Ellison as the front-runner for the Democratic National Committee. The left is in the process right now of sort of spinning out of control and getting goofier and goofier."

Gingrich also denied a contention that there is chaos in the Trump camp, choosing to refer to it as a "massive amount of energy."

"This is going to be a very energetic presidency," said Gingrich. "He has a cross between Andrew Jackson's disruptiveness and Theodore Roosevelt's energy and spirit thrown in. That's who Donald Trump is."

Trump, continued Gingrich, was successful with his reality show, "The Apprentice," and understands the value of "tension and showmanship, and candidly, the news media is going to chase a rabbit."
