Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he trusts Sen. Ted Cruz to speak well when he takes the Republican National Convention stage in Cleveland Wednesday night, even though his speech has not been seen.

"It's a big advantage for Donald to have Ted Cruz on that stage," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "Cruz is a very smart guy and Cruz understands he is very young by presidential standards. He has a very long future ahead of him. This is part of his re-entry. He is coming back now saying I learned a lot of stuff. I want to be part of the team."

Further, said Gingrich, he does not think Cruz will make mistakes like Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who refuses to attend the convention even though it's in his home state.

And despite the divisions going in the convention, Gingrich said he believes the Republican Party will leave this week's convention unified, and by the end of next week's Democratic National Convention, the party will be "amazingly unified," Gingrich said.

"I think the choice is going to be so big by the end of Philadelphia," Gingrich told the program. "By the end of Philadelphia we would be amazingly unified because they're going to be so far to the left, she [Hillary Clinton] will be so out of touch with reality that I think it will literally drive every Republican."

Gingrich will speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland Wednesday night, and has scheduled a Facebook Live chat for 9:45 a.m. to discuss the presidential election and to take questions from the public.

The former speaker Wednesday described the Cleveland event as "the most family convention."

"When you have Melania on the opening night, she hits it out of the park," said Gingrich. "Don Junior was unbelievable. Think of the pressure now on Eric as he gets ready for tonight because his brother did a great job. Ivanka and Donald tomorrow. It really is an amazing family convention."

Trump's family is also playing a large role in his campaign, said Gingrich.

"His core advisory group is Melania, Ivanka, Jared, Ivanka's husband and Eric and Don," said Gingrich. "I think that really is the core group. [Paul] Manafort is in the core group. They run the companies. They make big decisions together. They're remarkably talented, remarkably smart."

Gingrich also downplayed a New York Times analysis that claims Clinton has a "76 percent chance" of winning the White House.

"That's probably the same guys who said last August that Donald Trump had no chance to get the nomination," said Gingrich. " I keep telling people, these guys, all of these guys in the media have been wrong. They were wrong all year long. Trump came along. Now the same people were wrong all year told us their new definition."
