Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones' campaign said Tuesday it had raised more than $1 million in the first 98 days of her 2020 bid to replace retiring Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas.

"I'm honored by the groundswell of support we've received and together we're building a grassroots campaign to stand up to corporate special interests and bring commonsense priorities like quality, affordable healthcare and lower prescription drug costs to Washington, D.C.," Ortiz Jones said in a statement.

Ortiz Jones, 38, narrowly lost to Hurd in November. She is an Iraqi War veteran who eventually rose to the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force.

"As the daughter of a single mom and a first-generation American, I firmly believe it's time for hard-working Texas families to have a seat at the table in Congress and that's who I'll always serve," Ortiz Jones said.

Hurd, 41, announced earlier this month he would not seek re-election after three terms as the only African American Republican in the House.

After the abrupt disclosure, The Cook Political Report moved Texas' 23rd District from "Republican toss up" to "lean Democratic."

Hurd worked for the CIA for nine years, serving as an operations officer in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. He served on the House Appropriations and Intelligence committees.

His re-election race last year was too close to call for two weeks — and Hurd was ahead by fewer than 1,200 votes when Ortiz Jones ended her bid.
