Website Promoting Women in Politics a 'Front for Gillibrand Campaign'

Tuesday, 21 August 2012 02:11 PM EDT

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has come under attack for using a website designed to persuade women to get involved in politics as a fundraising tool for her own re-election campaign.

On the site, Gillibrand, a Democrat, says she wants to get "more women, Democrats, Republicans, all women, to again, hold their elected leaders accountable, vote, and hopefully run for office."

But it also contains "contribute" buttons that lead direct to a  Gillibrand for Senate contribution form, the Weekly Standard reported.

In an interview about the website — OffTheSideines.org —  with MSNBC, Gillibrand said "11 women" are running for Senate this year. Actually, 11 Democrats are running: Gillibrand neglected to mention that seven Republican women are also competing, including her own opponent, Republican Wendy Long.

The New York Republican party has challenged Gillibrand to "identify those Republican women who benefit, or have benefitted, from her website "or simply admit that contributions to the organization go directly to her reelection campaign," the Weekly Standard reported.
