Georgia's House Majority Leader Jon Burns is calling for Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and the State Election Board to review the state's absentee ballot verification process as the Jan. 5 runoff elections in two Senate races approach.

Burns has submitted a letter, signed by more than 100 current and newly elected House members to encourage Raffensperger to seek more staffing opinions that will provide support and oversight for the elections.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp posted the letter on Twitter, saying that he wanted to thank Burns, House David Ralston, and members of the House "for proposing necessary reforms that will help restore confidence in our elections."

In the letter, Burns said that many Georgians, including his colleagues, have "serious concerns" about the state's elections and as the Senate elections near, must have confidence in the progress going forward.

The House members are calling for Raffensperger to implement a more "robust verification process" for reviewing signatures on absentee ballot applications and mail-in ballot envelopes that will include independent observers.

They also address opportunities for the secretary of state or the State Election Board to join forces with other state agencies in support of state and local election officials on Election Day

"Multiple news outlets reported significant failures in counties across our state before, during, and after Election Day," he said. "These counties were rural, suburban, and metro-area and represented all demographics and areas of our state. We hope these suggestions can help Georgians rest assured that each and every legal vote is counted here in Georgia."
