With John Barrow's House Loss, Dems a Rarity in Deep South

Georgia Republicans removed the last remaining white Democratic congressman in the Deep South by defeating the folksy pro-gun John Barrow, The Daily Beast reported.

Rick Allen bested Barrow 55 percent to 45 percent to take the 12th District, WAGT Television reported.

Allen, who spent $1.5 million of his own money, was the first serious Republican opponent the five-term Barrow had faced.

He was fortunate in previous campaigns to find himself opposed by weak Republican opponents while garnering backing from conservative-leaning groups such as the National Rifle Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. But this time, all it took for Republicans to unseat him was an opponent "who could walk and chew gum at the same time," according to the Daily Beast.

Outside conservative groups also put in millions of dollars to unseat Barrow, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The GOP has been looking to retire Barrow for years with statehouse Republicans redrawing his district to make it more conservative. They tried to link him to President Barack Obama's agenda, but that became harder as Barrow voted increasingly against the president and with him just 35 percent of the time, according to the Daily Beast.

In remarks conceding the election, Barrow said that he had cast every House vote with his constituents in mind, asking himself what they would want him to do. He said he respected the voters' decision to select new representation and pledged an efficient transition.

Allen was equally gracious in victory, telling supporters that Barrow had called to congratulate him.

"And I'll tell you, the biggest obstacle we had in this campaign was the fact that John's staff had really good constituent services. And I told him that tonight. Because he offered.

"He said 'I want to make the transition as smooth as possible.' And I said I need you to teach our folks how to do that constituent services," WAGT Television reported.
