Retired Marine Corps Gen. John Allen, a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton's bid for president in 2016, has been named president of the Brookings Institution, The Hill reports.

Allen, who once commanded U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan under President Barack Obama, replaces Strobe Talbott, who headed the think tank for 15 years, according to the website.

"Brookings is home to some of the brightest minds addressing the most pressing issues we face today, including economic and domestic challenges, as well as foreign policy and national security matters, and I am looking forward to working with them to advance the mission of the Brookings Institution," said Allen, who had served as a foreign policy fellow at the think tank.

The Hill noted Allen gave a speech at the Democratic National convention in 2016 and appeared in ads for Clinton during her presidential bid.

The Washington Examiner reported Allen was one of 56 former senior officers who announced opposition to President Donald Trump's ban on transgender people serving in the military.
