Gary Johnson: Debate Commission Biased to GOP, Dems

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson, who needs to get to 15 percent in polls to be permitted on the national debate stage with Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, called out the debate selection as being a two-party, biased process, he said Sunday morning.

"The fact that 65 percent of Americans don't even know who I am, so what do I need to do if I was in the presidential debates? I would just need to show up and a lot of people would become aware that I am actually a candidate," Johnson told ABC’s "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

"I would like to point out to everybody, the presidential debates commission made up of Republicans and Democrats that have no intention whatsoever of seeing anyone other than a Democrat or Republican on the stage."

Johnson told host Stephanopoulos there should be a third candidate invited into events like Monday night’s first national debate between Trump and Clinton.

"Fifty percent of people right now registering to vote are registering as independent,"Johnson claimed. "How is it that we only have two candidates that can represent the views of the United States?"

Johnson also made a claim to Stephanopoulos he was polling higher than former presidential candidate Ross Perot when he was allowed into the debates. The host reminded the third-party candidate ABC's latest poll had him at five percent, while "Ross Perot was 6 percent or higher," Stephanopoulos said.

"You said you couldn't win without a debate," the host asked Johnson. "That it's, quote 'Game over,' if you don't get in the debates. Why keep going?"

Johnson responded: "It still is an ongoing process to get to 15 percent."
