More than 90 percent of Americans say they have no problem voting for a woman, a black, a Hispanic, a Catholic or a Jew for president, but less than half would vote for a socialist, a new Gallup poll finds.

Only 47 percent of American adults said they would support a socialist candidate for president, in the survey taken from June 2-7 of 1,527 adults.

By comparison, more Americans said they could vote for an atheist, when asked if they would vote for a qualified candidate with a particular religious, racial or other ideological backgrounds:
  • Catholic: 93 percent
  • Woman: 92 percent
  • Black: 92 percent
  • Hispanic: 91 percent
  • Jewish: 91 percent
  • Mormon: 81 percent
  • Gay or lesbian: 74 percent
  • Evangelical Christian: 73 percent
  • Muslim: 60 percent
  • Atheist: 58 percent
  • Socialist: 47 percent
According to Gallup, such dynamics can play a role in the ability of candidates to draw voters in presidential elections.

Among the declared candidates, there are four Catholic Republicans: former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former New York Gov. George Pataki, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and former Pennsylvania Rick Santorum along with one Democrat, former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley.

There are also two women, Hillary Clinton and Carly Fiorina; one black candidate, Republican Ben Carson; and two Hispanic candidates, Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination, is both the only Jewish candidate and the only self-identified socialist.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Carson, Santorum and Cruz have been working hard to earn the evangelical vote.

Almost 60 percent of Democrats said they would vote for a socialist, compared with 26 percent of Republicans. A Muslim candidate would earn the vote of 73 percent of Democratic voters, while only 45 percent of Republicans said they would vote for a candidate who is Muslim.
