A majority of Americans think Republicans do better than Democrats at keeping the nation safe and prosperous, a new Gallup poll found.

The survey released Tuesday showed 51 percent believe the GOP can better handle international terrorism and military threats, while just 38 percent said that about Democrats.

According to Gallup, Americans also tilt toward the GOP when asked which party can better keep the nation prosperous: 46 percent choose the Republicans and 42 percent preferred Democrats.

The survey was conducted Sept. 6-10 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

"Republicans have consistently been better positioned on the terrorism and military threat dimension over the years, while the party's current edge on prosperity coincides with [President Donald] Trump's relative strength on handling the economy," Gallup's Megan Brenan and Frank Newport wrote.
